England Runestone — U 344
Stone originally raised in Yttergärde, Sweden, but later moved to Orkestra, Sweden. Dated to the first half of the 11th century, it is notable because it references a famous Viking, Ulf of Borresta, who took three Danegeld payments in England under the command of the chieftains Skagul Toste (991), Thorkel the High (1012) and Canute the Great (1018).
English translation:
"And Ulf has taken three payments in England. The first was paid by Toste. Then Thorkel paid. Then Canute paid".
Old Norse transcription:
"En UlfR hafiR a Ænglandi þry giald takit. Þet vas fyrsta þet’s Tosti ga[l]t. Þa [galt] Þorkætill. Þa galt Knutr”.

He is filled with the flesh | of fated men.
Reddens the gods’ seats | with ruddy blood-gouts;
Black becomes the sun | in the summers that follow,
The weather treacherous. | Would you still know more?
—Gylfaginning, Prose Edda
